In 2017, I wrote an article about a pearl choker necklace. I spoke a bit about the history of pearl chokers giving a few examples of this type of jewelry made of different gemstones. Although, of course, the majority of pearl choker necklaces that we create are made of pearls.
By the way, chokers, including pearl choker necklaces, have a long history. For centuries, women wore them as choker necklaces representing style as well as protection.
In historic museums we may see ancient chokers from Egypt and Mesopotamia – in those days, women were wearing choker necklaces believing that the latter kept them safe and protected.
If you look at the Renaissance portraits, you will see many women wearing pearl chokers. By the way, the Queen Alexandra of Denmark, the Princess of Wales, the wife of the British King Edward VII was always wearing a choker necklace or even a few necklaces. It is said that Alexandra had a small scar on her neck; thus, wearing choker necklaces (and collars) and high necklines, she was hiding the scar. And she revived an old trend!
Pearl chokers in 2024
When I was writing the Blog post in 2017, I was mainly speaking about pearl chokers featuring large pearls. We were wearing these pearl necklaces solo as it is a fabulous statement piece of pearl jewelry. Great look – putting on a large pearl choker necklace.
But, today, our consumers want to wear another type of pearl choker as well – “skinny choker necklaces” featuring small or very small pearls. This type of pearl jewelry has an unexpected and youthful look that I like.
Actually, by many, a pearl necklace is still considered as something vane, traditional, and formal. No way! I am ready to argue – wearing a white pearl necklace, e.g. a pearl choker, you look stylish and contemporary.
Some designers go even further, making a pearl choker super short, sitting just above the throat. In this case, we call it a pearl collar.
I would say that a pearl choker made of high-quality pearls is an elegant take on a classic.
Why women like wearing pearl choker necklaces
Why does a pearl choker look so flattering and feminine? As a matter of fact, it draws attention to your neckline and collarbone. Thus, it creates a focal point. You may wear your pearl choker with off-the-shoulder, V-neck, and scoop-necks.
Some time ago, we started making pearl choker necklaces using small pearls. In those days, I liked the idea of layering necklaces and chains with different lengths.
Why does layering your jewelry continue to be a fashion trend? Because layering jewelry is a great way to express your uniqueness and taste. Moreover, it gives us a wonderful possibility to always look different playing with the jewelry you already have.
Obviously, you can layer your pearl choker with other pearl necklaces, gemstone necklaces, or chains. The look is stylish and always new. Layering necklaces having various lengths gives your own unique look. It will add a trendy touch.
Of course, a pearl choker is a fashion statement that will make you look on-trend and chic. The great advantage of a nice pearl choker is that you may wear it with any outfit and it will finish any look.
Often, women tell me: “I have not put on my pearl necklace because I am casually dressed” And I always respond that the beauty of pearl jewelry is that you may wear it day to night, with any outfit. Even put on your grandma’s classic pearl necklace – the pearls will illuminate your skin and make it glow! This is the beauty and magic of pearls.
As a result, at present, many fashion designers show a lot of short necklaces, especially chokers, on the runways adding the final chic touch to their new creations.
